Scars

In today's lesson I picked the scar for my wound project. I think a scar can be a very interesting wound because you can make a very interesting background story but it is also a wound that is not too difficult to make. So you then have time to really concentrate on the details and story of the character.

But first of all, what is a scar?

A scar is part of the natural healing process. After your skin got injured and the body tissue is damaged as well the body produces more collagen, which builds up where the damage is and helps with the natural healing process. At that time the blood supply increases in that area which makes the scar more raised up and red but after sometime it will gradually flatten and get lighter again( in normal cases) People normally say you should wait 1-2 years for your scar to get to the lightest colour they will ever be, afterwards it is very unlikely for the scar to change any further. Scars can be external or internal. When having surgery you have even both. But scars are very common and probably each and everyone of us has one no matter how small it is. Depending on the wound you had, your skins healing ability , and how you look after the part which is healing, it is possible that you won't see any traces from the wound after it is healed but most commonly you will always have a scar as they are never really going away. But they say with treatment you can help making the scar less visible. But I think that depends and you can't really say that's a fact, It may work for some but those treatment creams for example didn't help me at all. But as I said that's different for each person. But I think in my case I think it didn't really help as my skin's healing ability isn't that awesome from the beginning on and I get very easily scars. Even from the smallest scratch or mosquito bite^^
As said before scars are very common but the public defines perfect skin only if it is ,how should I say it? Untouched? Seamless?  For them, having scars, means you are not perfect which I think is completely stupid. I have many scars, from surgery and others from just being clumsy or just from bad skin healing but I still think my skin is pretty good^^ But then you have top models who can't insurance their left knee as much as their right knee because they have a tiny scar on it!
But yes, enough about that and back to the treatment of scars. There are not only special creams you can use . There is also( plastic )surgery,  Radiotherapy, Dermal fillers, Make-up, Laser therapy, Skin needling, pressure dressing, Silicone gels/sheets and Corticosteroid  injections. I f you want to know more about those treatments click here
Also apart from categorizing scars as external and internal there other forms of scars as well.

  • Acne scars: you get those form having severe acne , depending on type of acne you can maybe treat it with special acne creams( cortisone and fade creams) or with laser and filler treatments , but it is best to consult with your dermatologist first, there are also different types of acne

  • Contracture scars: can get those after being burned, can go deep and affect nerves and muscles, they tighten up the skin which can lead to having difficulties moving

  • Keloid scars: extend beyond original injury, they seem to not stop growing , are red(depends on skin color) and raised , hairless , shiny; for treatment: steroid injections, surgery, silicone sheets to flatten scar, pressure treatment or cryotherapy which is a freezing therapy and laser treatment

  • Hypertrophic scars: similar to Keloid scars but scar stays within the original injury size; reddish, raised, treatment: silicone sheets, steroid injections,
hypertrophic scar

  • there are also scars caused from stretch marks and  chicken pox( as an example)
Stretch Marks

Stretch marks don't always stay visible( in a red, purplish color for white skin) ,after time they will get less visible and lighter but I think it is very hard to get rid off them completely . But I saw a video on Youtube from  Bubz ( her Youtube channel is called Bubzbeauty and she used the Bioeffect EGF serum randomly on her tummy 10 month after having her first baby to see if it would help with the saggy skin and wow it looks like this serum is really awesome, so I thought maybe it would help with stretch marks as well.
Here is the video just in case you are curious:)

Chicken Pox

The chicken pox scars can look similar to that one. But it is a bit hard to find images of the scars because most just show the actual chicken pox. But maybe my sister can take some nice pictures for me as she has a few chicken pox scars:)
